Looking back, 1992 stands out as a messy, memorable year when the decade began to show its true colors.
In the United States, the Los Angeles riots after the Rodney King verdict forced a national reckoning, while overseas, the Bosnian War erupted and brought the Balkans back onto the nightly news.
Leaders also gathered in Rio for the Earth Summit, where countries pushed the idea of sustainable development and opened the U.N. climate convention for signatures.
Sports offered a rare burst of collective joy, with the Barcelona Olympics and the U.S. “Dream Team” turning basketball into a global event.
Pop culture provided worthy distractions, too, from “Aladdin” and “The Bodyguard” dominating screens to “Baby Got Back” becoming the kind of song you could not escape.
As the year closed, 1992 looked like a mix of unrest and momentum, and we could only stand back and wonder what would happen next.

That wasn't the only first for the mission, though, with Mae C Jemison becoming the first African American in space and Mark C. Lee and N.
