The name of the red and white spotted mushroom in the game is known as the Super Mushroom. A Super Mushroom provides a certain purpose depending on the game in which it is found. Its most common effects causes the character to double in strength and size, for example in the very first Mario game, once Mario or Luigi had a Super Mushroom, they would grow to twice as big and be able to smash through bricks and take an extra hit.The Super Mushrooms first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. However it has come a long way since then. The mushroom didn't have eyes and had a red & yellow colour scheme rather than the modern red & white. Also the shape of it was more ‘mushroom like’; these differences were due to the graphical limits of the time.
The manual of the original Super Mario Bros. actually refers to the Super Mushroom as the "Magic Mushroom", however this name had to be changed rather quickly due to the accidental reference of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
1-Up Mushrooms are green and white Mushrooms that gives your character and extra life when they eat one. 1-Up Mushrooms can be found in all the games where the Super Mushroom appeared, although you will have to look harder as they are more uncommon. 1-up Mushrooms are usually found in hidden blocks or in risky places for the player to get to, and sometimes are not worth the trouble. An alternate way of getting an extra life is to collect 100 coins.Again the 1-Up Mushroom has changed in colour since the Super Mario Bros. They used to be yellow and green. They always have a positive effect to the character when eaten.
